Sept 19 2325 Singapore Time - On My Way Home

Image
Well, I left DaNang Airport at 1155 and arrived in Singapore 3 hours later. The last time that I flew DaNang to Singapore was July '68. A huey was dropping off supplies to my field  company when someone hollered out, "Hannan, R & R."  I had had no clue if I would ever get an R & R or, if so, where it might be. I rushed to the chopper with my M-79 and pack and jumped on board. My head was still spinning as it lifted off and headed for Chu Lai. Then came a cold beer (something cold!), a shower (I had been in the field since Feb), and a haircut (longest my hair had ever been). From Chu Lai I believe that it was a C-130 that flew me to DaNang.   Leaving DaNang Air Base July '68 When standing on the tarmac in DaNang July '68, about to board a plane destined to Singapore for 5 days R & R, someone tapped me on the shoulder. To my surprise, it was Gary Davidson (aka G-Man) from my hometown of Versailles, Ohio. He was going on R & R in Taipei. What a coinci

Sept 17 8:15 Vietnam Time - My Hoi An Hotel & Heading to DaNang

Image
Well, it's time to wrap up things and work my way towards DaNang, Monday's departure airport. It has been a rewarding, successful month in Vietnam. For being considered a budget hotel, my Hoi An lodging is really decent. And the breakfast buffet, always impressive at hotels in Vietnam, is of utmost quality and the most massive that I have ever experienced.   I watch the men and women working hard every day cross the street. They are drying and bagging rice from early morning until late at night. It takes a 2-3 days for each "batch". And, if rain is expected, they rush to bag it all. When the threat of rain is gone, it's all spread out again. I have taken cold drinks to them a couple times. I'll be on the road to DaNang, just a short distance, in 2.5 hours.

Sept 16 1130 Vietnam Time - A Final Visit with Ms. Hanh

Image
After leaving the Vac's, we set off for a second visit with Ms. Hanh....with a temporary roadblock en route. It's always a refreshing treat to see Ms. Hanh's smiling face. Born with no arms, she is so hard-working and filled with tremendous spirit. Ms. Hanh, too, had received chickens that morning and is perfectly capable tending to them herself. We sat around peeling and eating fruit for a bit. Ms. Hanh has such dexterity with her feet. She eats, combs her hair, tends the critters, etc....what a resourceful lady.  Eating Fruit with Ms. Hanh, her sister, Vi, Khanh, and Ha (photographer!)    The water heater and shower that we set up in 2018 is working just fine.  Ms. Hanh's Water Heater & Shower   It was then time to say goodbye.  With Ms. Hanh, Her Sister, and Vi Ms. Hanh, as always, walks us to the car:  With Ms. Hanh and Vi                                       SEE YOU NEXT TIME!

Sept 16 0945 Vietnam Time - Visit with Mrs. Vac

Image
It was in 2018 when I, along with my daughter and granddaughter, first met Mrs. Vac and her family. The other three members of the family all suffered from mental illness and their living conditions were disheartening. Not even an outhouse.   Khanh, Katie, Kira, and Neil with Vac Family 2018     Vac House 2018     Thanks to YOU, we went to right work!                                         And kept rolling.  Now All Smiles!      Propane Stove and Cooking Pots And then work was started to renovate their house inside and out, including a new floor, windows, and doors.   And a toilet/shower house:   On this visit, we gave Mrs. Vac books for the boy and a water kettle. Unfortunately, she was the only one home at the time.  Books and a Water Kettle for Mrs. Vac   Mrs. Vac was very happy to receive chickens from us and had placed them in their new home.   Checking the Chickens      Whatever I was explaining to Khanh, he found it humorous!    We left with hugs and a promise to return. Now we

Sept 16 0830 Vietnam Time - Another Visit with Mr. Thuong

Image
After the Sept 9 chicken distribution, we drove a short distance to the house of Mr. Thuong. There were many banana trees en route. Just two years old when he fell into a fire, reducing his hands to mere stubs, Thuong has adapted amazingly well and can tackle about any task. He has a huge grove of papaya trees, the fruit of which is sold at local markets. He picked a few ripe ones for us. He also raises chickens and pigs. However, a swine disease has temporarily placed a halt on pig production. A vaccine has been developed but, much like the covid-19 vaccine for humans, it doesn't necessarily prevent infection. We took a look at the 50 chickens that he had received from us earlier that day. And it was a pleasure meeting Thuong's mother.   With handshakes & hugs, we were on our way to see Mrs.Vac.

Sept 15 1630 Vietnam Time - 750 Chickens in Huong Van Village

Image
I'm late in reporting last Friday's delivery of 750 chickens to 15 impoverished families in rural Huong Van Village. It was a great event with 750 21-day-old peepers waiting to be picked up by15 appreciative families. Khanh and I were joined by Vi and Ha of Hearts for Hue, who did a super job capturing the action with photographs and video. Also in attendance was Mr. Thuyen, the local Red Cross director.   With Mr. Thuyen, Vi, and Khanh    Chicken Bonding  When all recipients had arrived, we began distribution. Everyone was excited to get 50 chickens, which will serve as a source of food and income. And I was excited to personally hand the crate containing the chickens to each recipient. Hey, you Versailles, Ohio folks....It was Poultry Day in Vietnam!   A Little Talk Before Distribution    Remember Our Friend, Thuong? And off the happy recipients go with their chickens! h  MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!! As the distribution was almost complete, I noticed a man in a disabled trike gazin
